Hatchd at UX Camp '24
Last Friday, our design team attended UX Camp ‘24. We were blown away by the quality of talent within Perth’s design community, and the genuine sense of community and good vibes throughout the day!
We pitched four talks with Lucy and Ernest’s hype / Borat style pitch attracting the votes.
They, along with special guest appearance from Pas, explored the relationship between how you do anything is how you do everything, essentially how you show up in your personal life trickles into how you approach things in your professional life.
Bridging the gap between these two versions of ourselves enables us to bring our authentic selves to work.
This authenticity often translates into elevated design approaches as it unlocks creativity and problem solving. To learn more, check out anything by the renowned Organisational Psychologist, Adam Grant.
Lucy and Ernest explored this idea through 3 core themes:
- Your identity and how that influences your perspective,
- Everyone has a unique style or approach,
- Small habits can improve productivity such as habit stacking which can support you to make small improvements over time.
Capitalising on their hype / Borat style, they encouraged the audience to share their thoughts facilitating a meaningful dialogue in a fireside style chat.
Great insights from the audience, with different perspectives and ideas thoughtfully discussed. Some of the highlights included:
- Bringing your authentic self to work is industry dependent. For example, how you dress or present yourself in a corporate context will be different to a startup context.
- Chaos is part of the design process and a part of life. Nothing is ever certain and no journey to the outcome is the same...Embrace it.
Other talks we loved
There was a theme of authenticity and vulnerability with Simon Mateljan exploring the idea that you are your most important design project.
Similarly, the keynote, delivered by Lily Jovic and Matt Berry, explored how as designers we have the tools and skill sets to drive positive change allowing us to redesign the world separate from mass scaled catastrophe.
We also enjoyed Hatchd alumni, Jerry Chan, and his talk on how does your job spark joy and what key components of what a job offers is important to you - from the usual things of salary and flexibility to meaningful contributions to issues that matter and wonderful workplace culture.
We’re still soaking in the knowledge drops and insights from the Perth design community.
